Cosmopolitan Arts facilitates and hosts cultural and arts events in Leicester with the aim of bringing communities in the area together. With help from the DMU’s Confucius Institute and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cosmopolitan Arts put together the ‘Made In China’ project comprising of an exhibit and documentary about Leicester’s Chinese community.
After filming the Chinese New Year celebrations in Leicester in 2017, Cosmopolitan Arts commissioned Colab to produce a documentary exploring the rich history of Leicester’s Chinese community. Members of the community tell the story through their first hand experiences of moving from China to Leicester, and of building their new lives in this country.
Behind the Scenes
We conducted interviews with all participants in the project and filmed aspects of their lives so that we could best show their full experiences and tell their stories.
As part of the project, Cosmopolitan Arts wanted to work with as many young people as possible to give them the skills and connections they need to succeed in their future careers. Our production apprentice, Nikhil took the opportunity to learn a lot about what goes into a large project like this, from shooting and editing, to liaising with the client.
This is a short clip following the premier of the documentary and launch of the ‘Made in China’ exhibit, with interviews from some of the people who featured in the film.
The documentary premiered at the opening of the ‘Made in China’ exhibit at the LCB Depot on 13th of February and featured as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations in the city.
