Why Glassdoor is important for employer branding

Employer Branding is important to many of us when it comes to employment.

We not only want a job that meets our financial needs but also our lifestyle and personal requirements.

These elements become the forefront of what we look for to have a good experience.

Like if you were going on holiday, you can go to TripAdvisor to look at the best places to stay, eat and visit to have the best experience. But did you know that there is a version of that for your working life too? This is where Glassdoor comes into the conversation.

You might already know about Glassdoor so may be thinking ‘why should I read on?’

Glassdoor is TripAdvisor but for jobs.

Not only can you look for available jobs to apply for, but you can also look at companies’ profiles.

These profiles provide information such as previous employee’s experiences working there, interview reviews and salary reports.

This information is valuable not just for people looking for jobs but also for organisations. They can use this information to understand their staff’s viewpoint of the workplace and most importantly, how people outside of their organisation may view them.

‘In a 2016 Glassdoor survey, people read at least 4 reviews before forming an opinion about a company’

This can be crucial for employers on whether they get many applications for their job listings or how much business they get. Naturally, if you read more negative reviews than positive ones on a Glassdoor company profile, viewers are unlikely to want to learn more about that company.

Do you know what your Glassdoor rating is? If you don’t know then get to know it!!

That doesn’t just mean getting your employees to write good reviews about your company. It’s also about actively taking accountability on possible mistakes that have been made, revisiting your values & culture and creating change within your employer branding.

‘According to Glassdoor Research, 75% of active job seekers are likely to apply to a job if the employer actively manages its employer brand’

  • Attracts informed applicants that are most likely to be more engaged within the role advertised

  • Lowers recruiting costs to promote further advertisement

  • Stand out against your competition on how unique your organisation is

  • Attracts further work from new & returning customers

If you already have a good Glassdoor presence, you could look into elements such as your social presence. Could adding more visuals such as photos or videos help?

Or what about your internal presence? Do you need to improve on how to train your staff? If so, it might be useful to look into video and how that can help with emotive storytelling to connect with your values and messages you want to bring across to others.

It is well worth making an account on Glassdoor to access this information. You can use this information to see how it best suits your employment status from looking at jobs to figuring out your competition.
