How the University of Derby used video to take mental health training further

The Leading Wellbeing at Work programme was changing lives but only for the handful of leaders who could attend in person. By working with Colab to move it online, we turned limited face-to-face training into a powerful video series.

What needed to change

Kate Wood, Mental Health Project Manager at the University of Derby, knew her programme was making a difference. But with in-person delivery, reach was limited – and scaling without losing authenticity felt impossible.

On top of that, conversations about workplace mental health often stayed at the surface, rarely sparking the deep change that was needed. The challenge? Create something engaging, authentic and practical that leaders would take seriously – and actually use.

The Co.lab way

Over six months, we worked with Kate and Marked Improvement, to shape Leading Wellbeing at Work into an e-learning experience that still felt human and authentic.

Here’s how we brought it to life:

– Real workplaces on screen – filming with GF Tomlinson, a local construction company, to capture genuine stories and on-site experiences

– Expert insight – Kate delivering explainer videos and overviews direct to camera in our green screen studio

– Inclusive storytelling – tackling stigma head-on with content that addressed often-avoided topics like menopause and homophobia

The difference it made

The result? A training programme that now reaches far more leaders than face-to-face delivery ever could – without losing impact.

Available via the Work Health Hub, the video series is authentic, practical and accessible, helping organisations put mental health at the heart of workplace culture.
